As an Edinburgh cabbie, I had always enjoyed my meetings with Roger as he is such a lovely, interesting and engaging man and he had told me a few stories about his family over the year’s but on reading his book it was soon apparent what a fantastic life he has had not just for his time as a London cabbie.
As a child, he coped with his parents’ being profoundly deaf and being from different backgrounds. The old family photos are great especially that of his dad running for GB at the deaf Olympics (just like Eric Liddell in Chariots of Fire).
The stories about life in the East End of London during the War, selling fruit in Covent Garden, driving a London cab, his rise in the Credit Union and all the while meeting lots of interesting /famous people along the way are the stuff of legend. On top of that, I picked up a lot of hilarious, Cockney rhyming slang !
    A great read !

“Tales from the ranks and Beyond” is the best book I’ve ever read, funny, well written and what a life the author has had. A great story about one of life’s characters.

This is a fascinating account of a very interesting life. Roger is a guy who tells his life story in a very human and humourous way. He tells the story of his life as a London cabbie and beyond with great colour and clarity but it is his writing about his family which displays a profound love. This book was a joy to read and contained many laugh out loud moments!
